Active urban education at CityStudio
On July 5, and for three Saturdays in July, Greater Victoria Placemaking Network and Vancouver Island School of Art collaborated to bring Victoria Urban Photography (#vicurbanphoto) to CityStudio.
CityStudio is a downtown innovative learning hub where education meets the street. It’s a partnership of Camosun College, Royal Roads University, the University of Victoria and the City of Victoria that grew from The Mayor’s Task Force on Economic Development and Prosperity in late 2015 and early 2016.
Greater Victoria Placemaking Network joined the CityStudio Steering Committee this summer to help bring grassroots, citizen-led, urban learning to the community. The pop-up show was put together in just a few weeks, when the course instructor, photographer Meaghan Krauss, and our Education team leader Lorne Daniel connected over a shared interest in urban images.
The show featured themed photos by Katherine Manning, Mike Mayne, Heather Robbins, Kirk Schwartz, Kate Seaborne, and Patricia Tennant. The event allowed the course participants to extend their learning beyond the traditional classroom, gaining experience in how to mount and publicize an exhibit, and an opportunity to interact with the public.
“CityStudio is an exciting hub for urban learning and interaction,” Lorne Daniel noted. “It’s a place students, faculty and staff, and members of the public can collaborate to learn more about Victoria and invigorate the city.” In addition to the GVPN pop-up, University of Victoria has collaborated with the City of Victoria on two courses at CityStudio – Biketoria and From the Ground Up.
