On Saturday April 18 the Placemaking Network (GVPN) gathered for a guided conversation on PUBLIC BULLETIN BOARDS & POSTERING that explored the role and value of public physical bulletin boards and what role postering plays in cultivating place and neighbourhood.

Communication is VITAL for COMMUNITY BUILDING and Bulletin Boards are a big part of the communication infrastructure in our communities, they often appear in our shared spaces.

Placemaking is about PLACE and COMMUNITY together. It’s about the spaces we share in our communities AND the human relationships and interactions that arise in those places. Placemaking is described as a creative and intentional process that builds on our growing environmental awareness by helping communities and people thrive within our BUILT and NATURAL world.

Here online @vicplacemaking is trying to boost the signal of local, free events that align with our Placemaking mission to inspire people, neighbourhoods and communities to create vibrant public places that promote health, happiness and well-being. Hoping to act as a virtual billboard and helping you be informed on getting involved.

Watch out for Future Placemaking Cafés:
 Have you been wondering how you can get more involved in your community or neighbourhood? This year the Placemaking Network is hoping to give our community members more reasons and opportunities to gather and get to know each other. If you are curious about showing up in community but not sure where to start, we’d like to offer up our Placemaking Cafés as an easy way into our community that will let you get to know about the ideas and actions the Placemaking Network is thinking about.

Each Placemaking Café will have different topics and themes that encourage us to connect and engage with our neighbourhoods, shared spaces and each other. If you have any ideas about topics you’d like us to explore, we’d LOVE to hear from you.

Join the Greater Victoria Placemaking Network for

Join the Greater Victoria Placemaking Network for a guided conversation and exploration on the topic of the role and value of public physical bulletin boards and postering in cultivating place and neighbourhood. There will be prompts, some time for collecting your thoughts on your own, exploring in small groups, and bringing together the threads across the room. We’ll have some snacks and refreshments available.

This is a FREE event but please register via EventBrite - link in bio.

The Placemaking Network (GVPN), on World Water Day

The Placemaking Network (GVPN), on World Water Day (March 22nd), went on a Placemaking walk along ‘Johnson Creek’ facilitated by board member Hayley Johnson. She shared her passion and wisdom about the hidden waterways flowing under the City of Victoria to a group of curious community members and placemakers. We began to discuss ways that the buried creek could be acknowledged through placemaking efforts, allowing community members to become more aware of the invisible natural forces that affect our cities and lives. We discussed rain gardens, signage, seating and murals along the route of the creek to bring that awareness to this place that is buried and unseen. ‘Johnson Creek’ has been flowing through lək̓ʷəŋən Territory since time immemorial, and has been buried under the City of Victoria for more than 100 years. The path of the tour travels over the route of the former creek, and the water as it currently runs through the city’s drainage system.

Invisible Water/Ways is an educational campaign celebrating the waterways flowing under Greater Victoria developed in collaboration with Christine Lintott Architects @lintottarchitects and the Visualization Lab at UVic.

They have created an ArcGIS StoryMaps all about ‘Johnson Creek’ including archival pictures and maps allowing us to follow along the route of the creek that is now buried but still shapes the city and how it formed. Check it out, link in Bio.

Thank you to those who joined in with the Placemaking Network (GVPN) this weekend, we loved gathering with you at the Placemaking Café and the Placemaking Walk along ‘Johnson Creek’.

We had a good conversation about GREETING NEIGHBOURS facilitated by GVPN member, Mandy, at our Placemaking Café. On World Water Day our Placemaking Walk was led by board member, Hayley, taking us through downtown following the ‘Johnson Creek’. The Placemaking Network is grateful for the efforts of these members and all who showed up.

We hope to offer more Placemaking Cafés regularly, are there any topics you would like to have covered? We’re thinking about community building, making connections and strengthening resilience and are open to any ideas you might have. If you’re curious about contributing or helping out, we’d love to have a conversation!

World Water Day – Placemaking Walk along ‘Johnson Creek’

You’re invited to join the Placemaking Network (GVPN) on World Water Day this Sunday, March 22, 2026 for a walk along the route of a creek buried under downtown Victoria. We’ll learn about some of this creek’s history through archival maps and photos, while dreaming up ways to honour this buried waterway through placemaking.

Register for this free walk guided by GVPN if you’d like to join in to learn about this buried creek and help plan out placemaking projects for GVPN to take on in the months ahead. Bring your curiosity and something to take notes!

We’ll be meeting in front of the Atrium Building at the intersection of Yates and Blanshard. We’ll be walking through busy parks of downtown and on our feet for 2 hours, ending in a different location than we start. Participants must be comfortable walking downtown alone, or must be accompanied by a guardian throughout the walk. The route is accessible, although includes curbs and steps, which can be avoided with care for participants with wheels. Dress for the weather!
